Evidence for Anomalous Bond Softening and Disorder Below 2 nm Diameter in Carbon-Supported Platinum Nanoparticles from the Temperature-Dependent Peak Width of the Atomic Pair Distribution Function

چکیده
X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) analysis has been applied to five carbon-supported platinum nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 1.78(2) to 11.2(2) nm. Debye (θD) and Einstein (θE) temperatures were extracted from temperature-dependent PDF peak widths. A monotonic decrease in (θD) with nanoparticle diameter was found and could be well explained by the effect of increased surface area except in the case of the 1.78(2) nm diameter nanoparticle where the measured Debye temperature is significantly depressed from that predicted. This suggests an anomalous bond softening in the smallest sample.

It is well known that gold nanoparticles supported on TiO2 act as a catalyst for CO oxidation, even below room temperature. Despite extensive studies, the origin of this catalytic activity remains under debate. Indeed, when the particle size decreases, many changes may occur; thus modifying the nanoparticles' electronic properties and consequently their catalytic performances. Thanks to a state...
متن کاملChanges in metal nanoparticle shape and size induced by swift heavy-ion irradiation
Changes in the shape and size of Co, Pt and Au nanoparticles induced by swift heavy-ion irradiation (SHII) have been characterized using a combination of transmission electron microscopy, small-angle x-ray scattering and x-ray absorption near-edge structure. Elemental nanoparticles of diameters 2-15 nm were first formed in amorphous SiO 2 by ion implantation and thermal annealing and then irrad...
